More than one in 10 driving tests booked in Burton in 2018 were cancelled, according to figures obtained via a Freedom of Information request. Burton Driving Test Centre recorded 438 test cancellations, with a further 76 students not even turning up. In total, 514 tests did not go ahead.
Driving test cancellations can occur for a number of reasons, including examiner or student illness, bad weather, poor light, payment problems, incorrect candidate paperwork or if a student’s test vehicle does not comply with safety standards.
If a test is cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, candidates can usually get a refund and rebook their test free of charge, provided that sufficient notice is given (typically three working days).
Fewer Burton Driving Test Cancellations
The 514 recorded Burton driving test cancellations in 2018 is fewer than the 807 cancelled in 2016 and the 611 cancelled in 2017.
A large number of Burton driving test cancellations in 2018 were as a result of heavy snow during the ‘Beast from the East’ blizzards in late February and early March. When a candidate does not attend a practical driving test appointment, the £62 test fee is not refunded.
Commenting on Burton driving test cancellations, a DVSA spokesperson said: “Cancellations affect not only the examiners at the centre, but also other people aiming to get on the road as they will have to wait longer to take their tests.”
The DVSA said it is now advising learner drivers to wait until they’re absolutely ready to take their driving test – on the advice of a qualified driving instructor – to avoid cancellations.
The DVSA spokesperson said: “We know some candidates book their test before they are ready and then fail to turn up. We encourage learners to discuss their progress with their instructor and to book when they are confident they have the right skills, knowledge and attitude to drive safely and independently.
“We encourage candidates to give as much notice of cancellation as possible but unforeseen circumstances, such as illness, can also cause learners to miss their test,” the spokesperson added.
