Young drivers in Cumbria have been spoken to by the police in a bid to reduce the number of road traffic accidents involving young people that are behind the wheel.
Police officers from the Policing Unit at South Roads initiated the campaign as part of their ‘education and enforcement’ operation, codenamed ‘Operation Orwell’.
Official DSA figures highlight that drivers aged between 17-25 are more likely to be involved in road traffic accidents than any other age group.
In a statement from Sergeant Jo Fawcett, of Kendal Roads Policing Unit, she said: “Officers were deployed across the Kendal, Lakes and Furness areas throughout yesterday, specifically seeking to speak with younger drivers.â€
She added: “There is clear evidence that the education of young drivers, coupled with enforcement where necessary, has a positive effect on reducing the number of young drivers involved in collisions on our roads.â€
She continued: “With the start of the summer holidays lots of young people are taking to the road, often with a group of friends, to enjoy the many leisure activities and scenic locations our county has to offer. This presented us with an ideal opportunity to engage with as many young drivers as possible in order to heighten their awareness of the dangers associated with driving.â€
Case Study
‘Operation Orwell’ has already proven to be effective, recently a local female motorist, aged 21, discovered that she would be prosecuted after enforcement officers stopped her for using her mobile phone, whilst operating a motor vehicle, and for driving her vehicle without a valid MOT certificate.
In relation to the case study, Ms Fawcett said: “The stops are an excellent opportunity to check the safety of vehicles and to give advice where required. We also handed out advice booklets and hopefully promoted a good deal of thought, which in turn will contribute to the safety on our roads and lead to less tragedies.â€
She added: “This is the latest in a series of similar operations. Drivers of all ages can expect to see Roads Policing officers conducting similar events throughout the year with the intention of continuing the reduction in the number of serious and fatal collisions.â€
In a statement from Richard Rhodes, the Police and Crime Commissioner, he said: “At meetings all across the county I am constantly told that road safety is a significant issue. We all have to use our roads responsibly and it is important that younger drivers are educated and encouraged to do so. It is through all of us working together that we will make Cumbria’s roads safer.â€
A booktheorytesttoday.com spokesperson said: “This is a great initiative as the best cure for road traffic accidents among young drivers is prevention. Reducing accidents among young drivers will hopefully go some way to reducing insurance for young motorists in the future.â€
