Driving Theory Test Revision for Dyslexics

If you suffer from dyslexia, you might be worried about how your condition can affect your driving theory test revision and taking the theory test itself. However, don’t worry, there’s plenty of help available to prepare you for, and take, your test. Here are some practical revision tips and information about special requirements…

With so many driving theory test revision sources, other than books, available, the stress of having to read in order to boost your driving knowledge is eased. Studying can still be stressful, but there’s no added pressure to combat your condition while learning.

As an alternative to book-based learning, make use of videos and driving theory test revision software, each of which come with voice over accompaniments that enable you to listen and better retain information. Videos and theory test revision software are visually stimulating and give you a much better understanding of road-based scenarios than books.

Keep Driving Theory Test Revision Times Short

One of the best ways to improve your learning is to keep your revision times short. It’s better to do ‘little and often’ well in advance of your driving theory test, rather than trying to cram in your learning three days before your test.

Book Theory Test Today recommends no more than 30 minutes of revision a day. You can do this in three, 10-minute sessions, two, 15-minutes sessions or the full 30-minutes in one sitting. However, these timescales wouldn’t apply if you were doing an online, mock test, which you’d have to take under timed conditions.

Theory Test Special Requirements

When booking your theory test, all you need to do is specify that you have reading difficulties. The DVSA theory test accommodates dyslexics with a voice over version of the exam.

You can listen to the entire theory test through headphones in English or Welsh, with the option to hear the questions and answers as many times as you’d like.

Equally, there are other types of support available. If you provide proof of your reading difficulties when booking your theory test online – i.e. an email, letter or report from a teacher or other educational professional, or your doctor or another medical professional, you can get:

* Extra time to take the test – you will be given extra time during the multiple-choice questions section of the test.

* Someone to read what’s on the screen and record your answers – a member of DVSA staff at the theory test centre can read out the onscreen instructions and questions, plus record your answers during the multiple-choice part of the test.

* Someone to reword the questions for you – you can ask a member of theory test centre staff to reword questions to make them easier to understand. However, they

cannot change the technical language used as this is information you need to know, but they can change the order of the sentence and other non-technical words and phrases.
