Scouse Motorists Rack Up the Most Driving Penalty Points in England & Wales

New figures have revealed that Liverpool has the highest proportion of motorists with points on their driving licence.

The data, released by motoring magazine Auto Express, shows how one in eight drivers in the city have been awarded points on their licence for speeding and various other driving offences.

Of the 433,425 drivers licensed to operate a vehicle in Liverpool approximately 12 per cent (52,179) of them have at least one point on their licence. Further still, around 1.802 motorists have racked up nine points or more.

Drivers in Bournemouth racked up the second highest amount of penalty points, with 11.5%, closely followed by Blackburn, Slough and Dorchester with 11%, 10.9% and 10.8% respectively.

Over the border in Wales, one in 10 of Swansea’s 462,165 drivers have points on their licence along with 10% of drivers in Newport, making them the worst offenders.

In Scotland, motorists in Glasgow have accumulated more penalty points than anywhere else in the United Kingdom, amounting to one in seven of the 634,252 motorists in the city.

Behind Glasgow, Motherwell, Kilmarnock and Paisley represent the highest offenders for amassing penalty points across the whole of the UK.

In a statement from Auto Express Magazine, they said: “Liverpool may have the worst penalty point rate in England, with around 12 per cent of licensed drivers possessing endorsements. But four of the other worst five postcodes in the UK for driving offences come from around the Glasgow area.”

According to CTC the higher amount of points handed out to drivers in Glasgow can be attributed to high levels of traffic policing, highlighting that just 4% of 14,956 in Lerwick, located in the Shetland Islands, have been handed penalty points on their licence.

In contrast to the cities accumulating the highest number of driving penalty points, the eastern central area of London accumulated the lowest. Just 18 drivers have received points for committing a driving offence.

Truro, the western central area of London, Canterbury and Exeter also boasted a lower number of penalised drivers.
