Galashiels Driving theory test centre is based at Galashiels Transport Interchange.

The test centre is on the first floor, next to the bus station. There is a waiting area with seats and a toilet.

To help you prepare for your test, The Theory Test Pro app is available to download for free from the App Store or Google Play.

The app includes all the official DVSA revision questions, an overview of the hazard perception test and a mock theory test. You can also take practice tests in different modes, including timed mode and exam conditions mode.

When you arrive at the test centre, you will need to have your provisional driving licence with you. You will also need to bring a completed application form and appropriate photo ID if you have not already sent these to DVSA.

You will also be asked to complete a Hazard Perception test. This part of the test involves 14 video clips, each lasting about a second. You need to watch the video clip and click the mouse button whenever you see a developing hazard.

You need to score 44 out of 75 to pass the Hazard Perception test.

If you fail either the multiple-choice questions or the Hazard Perception test, you will need to retake both parts of the test.

You can retake the test as many times as you need to, but you will have to pay the full fee each time.

If you pass the multiple-choice questions and Hazard Perception tests, you will be asked to do a practical driving test.

The test will include normal road driving, hill starts, emergency stops and reverse parking.

You can take the practical driving test in a car or a motorcycle. You are allowed to drive either a manual or automatic vehicle.

In England and Wales, about 70% of candidates pass the practical driving test on their first attempt. In Northern Ireland and Scotland, about 80% of candidates pass the test on their first attempt.

You must be at least 17 years old and have held a full car driving licence for at least 12 months.

The licence must have been issued in the United Kingdom, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands and the Republic of Ireland.

If you are a new resident in Great Britain, you can exchange your licence from another country for a UK licence if it is written in English or has an official translation.

If you are a new resident in Northern Ireland or Scotland, you can exchange your licence from another country if it is written in English or has an official translation.

You will be required to pass both parts of the driving test before exchanging your foreign licence for a UK one.

The practical driving test lasts about 25 minutes.

The test usually takes place on a quiet road, with one or two other cars present. The examiner will sit in the back seat of the car you are driving.

The examiner will watch how you drive and ask you to carry out several manoeuvres.

In England and Wales, around 40% of candidates pass the test on their first attempt. In Scotland, around 45% of candidates pass the test on their first attempt. In Northern Ireland, around 50% pass the practical driving test on their first attempt.

As part of the practical driving test, the examiner will ask you to park your car in a car park or lay-by. The examiner may ask you to reverse into an allocated space or parallel park your vehicle beside another car or object (such as a road sign). If necessary, they may even ask you to drive with one hand (the other hand must be kept at 10 o'clock). You are not allowed to use any aids such as mirrors to help you park if they are not fitted as standard equipment by the manufacturer.
