I was wrong, and suddenly I realised that I didn’t know what I thought I did about driving. So, I crammed like crazy to pass my theory test, and just about managed it.

However, some are not so fortunate. In Scotland, a 22 year-old man has just set a new theory test failure record, clocking up 36 unsuccessful attempts.

He has spent a whopping £1,147 attempting to show that he understands the rules of the road.

His 36 failures make him the worst ever learner driver to sit the driving theory test in Scotland since the Driving & Vehicle Standards Agency began keeping records 10 years ago.

In a statement from an AA spokesperson, they said: “It is all about being well prepared and for some people all forms of exams are difficult. We always recommend professional tuition for learner drivers rather than practising solely with family and friends.”

However, the story ends well for this unnamed Glaswegian man because he did pass the theory test at the 37th attempt, but still has the practical exam to contend with.Â

Records being set for theory test failure are becoming more commonplace in the UK. The record for the most failures across the entire UK is held by a 28 year-old woman from south London. She has failed the theory test a staggering 110 times.

At present, the UK theory test has a national average pass rate of 65.4%.

But, it’s not just the theory test that drivers struggle with. In Scotland, the record for the most number of practical driving test failures belongs to a woman from Anniesland, Glasgow, who had failed the exam 25 times before passing at the 26th attempt in 2009.

In a statement from a DVSA spokesperson, they said: “It’s essential that all drivers demonstrate they have the right skills, knowledge and attitude to drive safely. The driver testing and training regime tests candidates’ ability to drive safely and responsibly as well as making sure they know the theory behind safe driving.”

The fact that theory test failure records are being set shows that some candidates are just not prepared. When someone is failing the exam 36 or 110 times, you have to question how well they have studied the theory of driving.

Lessons need to be learnt.
