From September 4th, 2014, a revised theory test will be introduced across the islands to better illustrate the demands of modern driving in these locations.

The Book Theory Test Today blogger says: “The new theory test has been devised by infrastructure teams from Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man and will be a computerised exam, similar to the test conducted on the UK mainland.”

In a statement from a Manx Government spokesperson, they said: “The new test will emphasise the distinctive aspects of island driving and the differences compared with the UK mainland.

The exam will feature a series of multiple choice questions and a hazard perception section, both of which must be passed before drivers can take the practical driving exam.

The move to introduce a new theory test across the islands comes as Government officials strive to improve road safety.

In a statement from Isle of Man Infrastructure Minister, Phil Gawne, he said: “We are continually striving to improve driving standards in the Isle of Man to make our roads as safe as possible. I am delighted that we have been able to work in partnership with our colleagues in Jersey and Guernsey to develop this theory test to improve driving standards.”

The new look theory test asks each candidate which island they are from, ensuring that the questions they are required to answer are specific to the island a candidate specifies. This means that anyone from the Isle of Man for instance will not have to answer any questions applicable to Guernsey or Jersey.

When quizzed about the cost of the theory test ministers said they remained undecided. In October there are plans to reduce the price of the theory exam on the UK mainland by £6, bringing the price down to £25.

The Book Theory Test Today blogger says: “It’s likely that ministers across the islands will follow suit with the UK mainland in terms of the price. At present the cost of the theory test in Jersey for example is already cheaper than the UK mainland, priced at £30.15.”

The new look exam will be applied to all vehicle categories including:

Cars

Buses

Coaches

Lorries

Motorbikes

The Book Theory Test Today blogger says: “There are significant differences to the theory test across these islands. For example, in Jersey candidates are only required to answer 35 multiple choice questions with a score of 30 needed to pass. On the mainland there are 50 questions with 43 correct answers needed in order to receive a pass certificate.”

Once you’ve obtained your theory test certificate it never expires. This is very different to the UK mainland where the certificate is valid for two years. Within that two year period you’re required to pass your practical exam or face doing the theory test again.

Book Theory Test Today offers an intermediary service assisting clients with booking a UK theory test, or practical test, at test centres across the nation.
