The cockpit drill requires you to follow the DSSSM checklist, DSSSM being D<\/strong>oors, S<\/strong>eats [both of which you have covered, right?], S<\/strong>teering, S<\/strong>eat belt and M<\/strong>irrors. Remember, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s abbreviated to DSSSM to help learners digest the cockpit drill quickly. Now, let\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s tackle steering.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step Three \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Steering <\/strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u201c What needs to be checked<\/strong>?<\/span><\/h2>\n

The steering wheel<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Going back to part one, your seat needs to be set so that you can comfortably control the steering wheel. You should place both hands at the top of <\/span>wheel, as this is the part that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s furthest away from you. You don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want to be too close to it or stretching to reach it as this will affect your ability to control the steering.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ideal position, when gripping the top of the wheel, is to have a slight bend at the elbow. Keep one hand on the wheel and then use those seat controls, mentioned in part one, to move the back rest of your seat backwards or forwards until your ideal setting is found. The back rest controls are usually located at the lower right-hand side of your seat.<\/span><\/p>\n

The head rest<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Yes! The head rest setting can affect your ability to steer a vehicle correctly. However, it serves a more important purpose in that it can help to reduce neck injuries in the event of a collision from the rear. Most modern vehicles tend to have large headrests, putting the driver in a good position by default.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, if you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re driving an older vehicle, chances are you will have to adjust the headrest. For best performance, the centre vertical position of the headrest should be in line with your ears.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s it, you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve nailed the steering section of the cockpit drill.<\/span><\/p>\n
