June 1, 1935, marks the dawn of the UK driving test, when it became compulsory for motorists to pass a practical driving exam before being let loose on Britain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s roads. It was introduced following a few months of voluntary testing.<\/span><\/p>\n

It looked so different back then, with no official driving test centres established, wannabe motorists had to arrange the 30 minute practical driving test<\/strong><\/a> themselves, meeting their instructors at landmarks such as town halls or train stations.<\/span><\/p>\n

The present<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

In its current form, you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re now required to book a theory test<\/strong><\/a> and pass it before you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re permitted to take the UK driving test. The theory test features a set of 50 multiple choice questions, 43 of which must be answered correctly to pass, plus there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the hazard perception test to contend with.<\/span><\/p>\n

The future<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

With the death toll on Britain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s roads rising, many road safety groups are calling for the introduction of a graduated driver licensing scheme, a system that enables drivers to gradually build their driving skills and experience. Many countries around the world already adopt this system and it won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be long until it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s used in Britain by the looks of things.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many manoeuvres that have long featured as part of the driving test, such as the three-point-turn and the reverse around the corner also look set to be scrapped, to make way for more common driving scenarios such as bay parking.<\/span><\/p>\n
