Upon completing your <\/em>DVSA driving test<\/em><\/strong><\/a> you will be issued with a test report. In this three part series, Book Theory Test Today breaks down each section of the driving test report so you know the criteria you will be assessed on.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The DVSA driving test report is used by your examiner to mark every aspect of your driving ability. Every candidate is assessed according to the same report, so it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s worth knowing what to expect so that you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re fully prepared.<\/span><\/p>\n

DVSA Driving Test Assessment Criteria<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

#1 – The Eyesight Test \u00e2\u20ac\u201c <\/strong>The DVSA driving test begins before you even start driving with an eyesight test. If you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re required to wear glasses or contact lenses, they must we worn throughout your exam. The eyesight test will require you to read a vehicle\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s registration plate from a distance of 20 metres.<\/span><\/p>\n

#2 – Highway Code & Safety \u00e2\u20ac\u201c <\/strong>If you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve passed a theory test<\/strong><\/a> [we say if, because if you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re taking a practical test for a specialist vehicle you may not have been required to take a theory test], you will not be required to answer Highway Code questions at the practical test stage. However, from a safety perspective, you will be required to identify certain safety features of your vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n

#3 – A Controlled Stop \u00e2\u20ac\u201c <\/strong>The exam invigilator will be assessing your ability to bring your vehicle to a complete stop, quickly, safely and under complete control. You\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll need to avoid locking the wheels and be mindful of the weather conditions. If conditions are wet, remember that it will take double the amount of time to stop your vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n

#4, 5 and 6 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Reversing Exercises \u00e2\u20ac\u201c <\/strong>You will be required to demonstrate your ability to control your vehicle safely while performing reverse manoeuvres such as the reverse around a corner, reverse parallel parking or bay parking. You must be constantly implementing the mirror, signal, manoeuvre (MSM) protocol.<\/span><\/p>\n

#7 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Vehicle Checks \u00e2\u20ac\u201c<\/strong> You will need to demonstrate to an examiner a basic level of safety checking. For instance, you could be asked to show how to check fluid levels or tyre pressures. This is known as the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcShow Me, Tell Me\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 test.<\/span><\/p>\n

#8 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Taking Precautions \u00e2\u20ac\u201c <\/strong>Prior to starting the engine you will be assessed on whether you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re correctly seated and able to reach the required controls.<\/span><\/p>\n

#9 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Vehicle Control \u00e2\u20ac\u201c <\/strong>This area is vast and you will be assessed on your use of the accelerator, brake, clutch, gears, foot brake, hand brake and steering. Particular aspects will be given closer assessment such as the gears, where you will be expected to change gears without having to look at the gear stick to do it.<\/span><\/p>\n

#10 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Moving Off \u00e2\u20ac\u201c <\/strong>You will be assessed on your ability to move off smoothly and safely on level ground, a gradient and at an angle while implementing the MSM protocol. The ability to do this without stalling will be closely monitored.<\/span><\/p>\n
