LGV Theory Test | A Step-By-Step Guide

If you want to drive a large goods vehicle (LGV) as a profession, you will need to pass an LGV theory test. The exam is different to car and motorcycle theory exams. Here’s what to expect and how much it will cost you to take the LGV theory exam.

The LGV theory test is split into three parts… Module 1A, Module 1B and Module 2. Similar to the car and motorcycle theory test, the LGV exam has a multiple-choice questions section and a hazard perception section. However, the LGV theory test also features a case study theory test.

Module 1A of the LGV Theory Test – Multiple-Choice Questions

To pass the multiple-choice part of the LGV theory test, you must answer 100 questions, scoring a minimum of 85 to pass. The exam lasts for one hour and 45 minutes. The fee for the test is £26 on weekdays, evenings, weekends and bank holidays.

LGV Theory Test Module 1B – Hazard Perception

The LGV hazard perception test features 20 hazard clips. You must be able to spot potential hazards as they develop on the screen. A minimum score of 67 out of 100 is needed to pass this part of the exam. The fee for the LGV hazard perception theory test is £11 on weekdays, evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Only when you have passed Module 1A and Module 1B will you be issued with a theory test pass certificate, which is valid for two years from the date that you passed Module 1A of the exam.

If you fail a Module, you will only be required to resit the one you failed. If you fail the multiple-choice section, then you only have to resit that part, and vice-versa for the hazard perception test.

Case Study Theory Test (Driver CPC Module 2)

If you want to drive an LGV commercially, you must sit The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence. It’s a compulsory qualification that all commercial LGV drivers must have. The exam has to be taken at a DVSA-approved theory test centre. The fee for this part of the theory test is £23 on weekdays, evenings, weekends and bank holidays.

During the exam, you will be asked a series of questions with multiple-choice answers. The case study theory test features diagrams, video clips, text and audio to help present the questions. Each test consists of seven case studies and you will be asked six to eight questions per case study.
